참이상한나라 대한민국 Korea, Wonderland?

마스크를 못 사는 국민들에게 보탬이 될 까 하는 생각으로 한 땀 한 땀 손수 바느질했다는 83세 할머니는 그렇게 만든 20여개의 마스크를 그렇게 만든 20여 개의 마스크를 수줍게 전달하고 사라졌습니다. 이 이상한 나라 사람들 살아가는 방식이 늘 이렇습니다.

어느날 몹쓸 바이러스가 어느날 몹쓸 바이러스가 사람들 사이로 퍼져 나가 사람이 사람을 미워하게 된 시절에도 마찬가지였죠. 어려울 때면 공동체를 위해 팔을 걷어붙이던 이 나라 사람들은 이번에도 가만히 있지 않았습니다. 시키지 않아도 기부금을 내고 의료 인력이 부족하다고 하자 전국의 의사와 간호사가 몰려들었습니다.

누군가는 도시락을 만들기 시작했고 또 누군가는 이들의 임대료를 깎아줬습니다. 따지고 보면 이 나라의 이상함은 이번이 처음이 아닙니다. <1997> 외환위기로 휘청거리던 시절에는 온 국민이 나랏빚을 갚겠다고 집안 깊숙이 숨겨뒀던 금붙이를 죄다 들고 나오기도 했고요.

2007년 태안 기름유출 사고 유조선 사고로 바다가 온통 기름에 뒤 덮였을 때는 어른 아이 할 것 없이 천 조각을 가지고 나와 모든 기름을 닦아낸 말도 안 되는 일을 했던 이상한 사람들이었으니까요.

2020년 이번에도 마찬가지 였습니다. 

많은 나라가 굳이 감염자를 밝히지 않으려고 할 때도 이 이상한 나라는 묵묵히 검사를 계속해 나갔습니다. 감염자 수가 늘어가며 사람들이 수군대기 시작했지만 이상한 나라의 사람들은 멈추지 않았습니다. 그들은 바이러스의 전파를 막기 위해 모든 과정과 결과를 투명하게 공개하고 대책을 마련했습니다.

사람들은 이상한 나라를 다시 보게 되었고 이상한 나라를 배우자는 목소리가 나오기 시작했습니다. 이상한 나라가 했던 일은 결국 피하지 않고 앞장서서 용감하게 바이러스와 싸운 것이라는 걸, 이들이 보인 투명한 시스템과 리더십은 위기에 맞서는 민주사회의 핵심이라는걸 알게 됐기 때문이죠. 오늘도 이상한 나라는 흔들림 없이 바이러스를 상대로 맞서고 있습니다. 혹시 여러분이 바이러스와 싸우는 이들을 마주치게 된다면 "함께 극복" 이라고 외쳐주세요.

이상한 나라는 힘들었지만 의미 있었던 싸움을 웃으며 여러분께 전할 겁니다.

This is the way people of Korea are.

When a virus was spreading from person to person around the world. and people were shunning each other in fear of infection, the people of Korea came together.

They rolled up their sleeves and helped their community in need.

"People in Wonderland" They came together again.

Donations flooded in from all across the country.

Voluntary doctors and nurse flocked to virus-affected areas.

Volunteers made and delivered free lunch boxes.

Landlords lowered rent for struggling businesses.

<1997> The unity of the Korean people has always emerged in times of need. During the Asian financial crisis, all citizens participated in a nationwide gold collection to pay off the debt to the IMF. They donated their cherished jewelry and any items made of gold. <2007> Taean Oil Spill When an oil spill from a tanker blackened a wide stretch of coastline, they came together to do things that others thought were impossible. People of all ages showed up with cloths and cleaned up oil-covered beaches.

<2020> When the virus hit the nation, the korean people came together again. When other countries refused to reveal their own virus outbreaks, Korea got widespread testing up and

running. When fear gripped the nation with the number of cases soaring, Korea continued the fight against the virus.

They provided information transparently and laid out measures to combat the spread of the virus. The world started to see Korea differently. The world saw it as a role model to follow in the fight against the virus. The world realized that the people of Korea bravely confronted the virus and led the fight against it.

The world realized that Korea showed a good example of how democracies can face a crisis with transparency and leadership. Even today, Korea is steadfastly fighting the virus.

If you happen to meet any Koreans who are fighting the virus, please say to them ,

  "Let's overcome this together!"

Then they will say that what they've gone through was really tough, but it was a good lesson for them.
